How To Have A Great Yard Sale

"One person's trash is another person's treasure"

Clear the clutter in your home and make some extra money. And get your kids involved by teaching them about buying and selling. Here's a couple of tips to help you out along the way.

Mark Your Calender!
Setting the date for the yard sale is very important! Try to stay away from holiday weekends. People either barricade themselves inside because they fear the traffic OR they're on vacation. And be sure to check with the local government to see if you need a yard sale permit.

Gather Your Items
Gather up all of your items you want to sell and get them all spruced up. Do not sale anything that has deep sentimental value. There's a difference between clutter and valuables. You don't have to deep clean everything you're selling but don't sell a dust infested picture frame. Wipe it off!

Pricing Your Items
You have old clothes, broken toys and a mismatched set of china. But don't be so quick to mark them with 50-cent price tags. These days, avid bargain hunters troll garage sales for mispriced items -- only to turn around and resell them at a higher cost on eBay! When pricing items, log on to see what they're going for. And don't mark your items with the price you expect to get. For shoppers, bargaining is an important part of the yard sale experience. Make the price tag for a bit more, allowing a little room for you to come down in price without accepting less than you'd like.

Promote! Promote! Promote!
Advertising your yard sale will get you lots of potential buyers. Place classified ads in your local papers. Creating attractive, clutter-free, clearly written signs to put up around your home will also help attract customers. I'm sure your children will love to help with this, just make sure that the signs are legible. Put a sign in your yard the day before that reads "Yard Sale Tomorrow". And, of course, balloons and signs in your yard always work.

Setting Up Shop
Your sale area should be enticing to your customers. It doesn't need to be packed in boxes or thrown out mindlessly on a table. Arrange your items in departments. Take the time to clean up your items so they'll be more likely to sell. Hang up the clothes so they can air out and run a dust brush over small knick knacks. If you're selling electric items have an extension cord plugged up so customers can be assured the item does work.

Get your children involved by asking them to find 5 or so toys they would like to sell. Allow them to price them, with your help of course, and sell them. Put the money in a piggy bank for them to have later on. You can also help them set up a lemonade stand to make some extra money. Playing active background music is also a recommendation. Music always eases people. I'm sure your potential buyers will love it!

Cash & Carry
When your customers start showing up at 7:30 am in the morning you're going to need some change. Be sure to have lots of coins and lots of dollar bills on you. Yes, I said ON you. Do not put your money in a money box. It's easy to walk off with. I recommend wearing an apron or a fanny pack.
